Geek Thoughts

Where geeks speak out and be heard!

Welcome to Geek-Thoughts by Otig!                                          3/4/2007

Ok, this is my first foray into the world of blogging.  I wanted to create a site where geeks like myself can speak out on their favorite topics:  computers, video games, movies, comic books, cars, engineering, etc.

The format I would like to keep is that I will start a topic and continue to discuss said topic for approximately a week to give everyone time to chime in and then move on to the next topic.

Who am I?

My internet persona is Otig.  You may have seen me in Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest2, City of Heroes or World of Warcraft.  Where did the name Otig come from?  It was a randomly generated name when I created my SWG account.  It was simple, easy to spell when texting and easy to remember, so I've kept using it ever since.  If you are into MMORPGs, check out my guild's website at
The House of Morrigan.

I currently live in Tucson, AZ
.  I grew up in a small town in Ohio and went to college at The University of Dayton where I graduated with a Bachelors & Masters of Mechanical Engineering.

My favorites:

Movies - Anything sci-fi/fantasy, action or horror (
300 is a MUST see).
Comics -
DC, Vertigo, Wildstormand PVP.  Check out Tucson's best comic shop Charlie's.
Cars - Mine, of course
2006 Civic Si.

OK, enough for now... gotta save some for later

90% of drivers don't know how to drive.

I don't know if it is the competitiveness in me or what, but I can't stand the way most people drive.  I swear I should have become a racecar driver.

1.) You better be going 5-10 mph over the speed limit in the left lane on a highway or GET OUT OF THE WAY! Even if you are going 5-10 mph over, if someone comes up fast behind you, move over and let them pass.

2.) The use of cell phones while driving should be banned... PERIOD!  Tests have shown that it is the equivalent or worse of being drunk.

3.) Only use the brake when you have to.  Letting off the gas will slow down your vehicle.  Any time you hit the brakes it creates a ripple effect with the cars behind you in which each successive car ends up slowing down a bit more.

4.) Vehicles requiring a CDL (semi's), moving vans, trucks loaded down or towing something should not be allowed in the left lane on the highway.  They simply cannot accelerate/decelerate fast enough to maintain a good flow of traffic.

5.) If you're in the left lane, DO NOT slow down to let someone in.  The person wanting to move into the left lane should be going at least as fast as traffic in that lane and only move over when there is room.

6.) When the light turns green, move when the car in front of you moves.  Don't wait until they're ahead of you are a car length+.  This really ticks me off when I have to wait for another light because someone is slow in getting moving.

Enough ranting for today.

Otig out!!

YES! This should be published in every driver's handbook. In fact, in the N. Carolina driver book (back when i read it in '94) They stated that the #1 reason for traffic accidents was people driving too slow, particularly in passing lane. I'm not suggesting you need to drive faster than you can safely control your vehicle, i'm merely stating that if someone wants to go faster, move over. The sign says "slower traffic keep right". If you're in the fast lane and someone's wanting to go faster, you're the slower traffic! Move over!
