Geek Thoughts

Where geeks speak out and be heard!

Welcome to Geek-Thoughts by Otig!                                          3/4/2007

Ok, this is my first foray into the world of blogging.  I wanted to create a site where geeks like myself can speak out on their favorite topics:  computers, video games, movies, comic books, cars, engineering, etc.

The format I would like to keep is that I will start a topic and continue to discuss said topic for approximately a week to give everyone time to chime in and then move on to the next topic.

Who am I?

My internet persona is Otig.  You may have seen me in Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest2, City of Heroes or World of Warcraft.  Where did the name Otig come from?  It was a randomly generated name when I created my SWG account.  It was simple, easy to spell when texting and easy to remember, so I've kept using it ever since.  If you are into MMORPGs, check out my guild's website at
The House of Morrigan.

I currently live in Tucson, AZ
.  I grew up in a small town in Ohio and went to college at The University of Dayton where I graduated with a Bachelors & Masters of Mechanical Engineering.

My favorites:

Movies - Anything sci-fi/fantasy, action or horror (
300 is a MUST see).
Comics -
DC, Vertigo, Wildstormand PVP.  Check out Tucson's best comic shop Charlie's.
Cars - Mine, of course
2006 Civic Si.

OK, enough for now... gotta save some for later

H.S. Running Back Phenom Sam McGuffie

As pointed out previously, I am a HUGE football fan, especially college football and THE Ohio State Buckeyes!  Anyway, I was surfing through football clips on Youtube.com and came across a high school running back by the name of Sam McGuffie.  If you like football at all, you have to watch this clip

This kid is extremely fast, can cut on a dime and can break tackles.  After watching the clip I started reading down through comments and found several talking about the fact that Sam is white and how he may have trouble getting into a big name program as a running back.  I have to admit, my first thought was 'da-um that kid's pretty good for a white boy!'  I immediately thought... 'does that make me racist for thinking that?'  I don't think so because, if you look at running backs today in large college programs and the NFL, the players are predominantly black.  So, does stating a fact based on the current norms make it a racist statement?  I then thought to myself that it wasn't all too long ago that blacks playing football (or any college or pro sport) at any position was a rarity.   Have we come full circle?

Just to clarify... I like to think that I am in no way, shape or form a racist.  I wholeheartedly believe that how you treat a person should NEVER have anything to do with the color of their skin.

Yes, we have come full circle for the facts you stated -- running backs are predominantly black and whites these days struggle with race prejudice when trying to get into pro or college sports. Like you said, "he plays pretty good for a white boy". Sorry -- that statement IS racist, regardless of the current norms. Why not simply state, "he plays pretty good"? Seems odd that white people struggle with race prejudice these days and nobody seems to care or notice. Whites face prejudice not only in sports, but also in the workforce. When faced with two equally competent applicants, one black (or Asian, Hispanic, etc.)and one white, who do you think will get the job? Likely not the white person. Our society is trained so keenly NOT to be racist that in general we actually have become prejudiced against whites in many respects. I personally hate to see a young white boy or girl who tries to dress, talk, and behave as if they were black. What's wrong with being proud of yourself for whoever you are, whether that's black, white or green. That goes for a person's sexual affiliation as well. Who cares what color a person is or whether they're gay, straight, or bi? Look at people for what they are on the inside and never judge them for what you see on the outside.
